January 19, 2021 — Norway is investigating the deaths of 23 very frail elderly people who died within days of receiving the Pfizer BioNTec COVID-19 vaccine.
After investigating 13 of the deaths, the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NOMA) concluded that common side effects of mRNA vaccines, such as fever, nausea, and diarrhea, may have contributed to the fatalities.
The statement warns:
“Adverse reactions to the vaccine occurring within the first days following vaccination (such as fever and nausea) may contribute to more serious course and fatal outcome in patients with severe underlying disease.”
Health officials in Norway have updated the vaccination guidelines to recommend that doctors thoroughly evaluate each individual patient to determine if the vaccine’s benefits outweigh the risk of side effects.
As of January 14, around 42,000 people in Norway had been given their first dose of the COVID vaccine. Priority has been given to the elderly, and people nursing homes with underlying health problems.
